On this day, news arrives at Versailles of an old courtier’s death:
“M de Vardes died this evening in Paris. He was a chevalier of the Ordre and governor of Aigues-Mortes…He had been the captain of the Cent-Suisses and was spoken of as one of those to be named governor of the Duc de Bourgogne. He leaves an income of 40,000 livres to his son-in-law.”
