The last century has brought wonders to medicine and health, that if they were to appear at Versailles they might be condemned as magic.

In those days, you had more funerals than hot dinners, how many young lives lost.

It's true. Every time I imagine I might like to time-travel to the 18th century, I think of the medical and dental practices of that period and the desire goes away.

Yes, and no toilets, no showers! But a quick walk through Versailles park would be lovely.

I have just stumbled on your Substack, David and looking forward to perusing more of your traductions.

Having written a YA time travel adventure book, "Find Me in the Time Before," part of the Edge of Yesterday series, my own time travels to the Versailles century were in the scandalous company of Voltaire and Emilie, la Marquise du Châtelet in Paris, at Versailles, and at Emilie's château at Cirey.

Very much enjoyed - there was even a bit about Voltaire, then serving time in the Bastille, where my young 21st-century protagonist is instructed on the virtues of the bâton à mâcher as a substitute for her electric toothbrush at home. https://edgeofyesterdaybooks.com/

Thanks for reading, Robin. Voltaire and Emilie are favourites of mine, too. I have a well-worn, much-loved copy of Nancy Mitford's Voltaire in Love on my shelf. I had a look at your Substack. You're working at an interesting intersection of science and story telling.
